Real habits that save our family hundreds of dollars each year!

With grocery prices rising and busy schedules becoming the norm, I hear the same question again and again:
How can we save money on food without spending hours cooking?
For our family the answer has been surprisingly simple. The Thermomix® hasn’t just changed how I cook – it has completely changed how we plan meals, shop for groceries, and manage weeknight dinners.
The result is healthier food, less stress, and savings that genuinely add up to hundreds of dollars every year.
Meal Planning: The #1 Way I Save Money on Groceries
The biggest financial difference started with one small habit: weekly meal planning.
Every weekend I spend 10-15 minutes planning dinners for the week ahead. Nothing complicated – just enough structure so we know what’s coming.
Before deciding what we’ll be cooking, I always check:
– the fridge
– the freezer
– the pantry

This helps me use ingredients we already own instead of buying duplicates or letting food go to waste.
Before I started doing this, weeknight dinners often ended the same way: coming home tired, opening the fridge, and realising there was no clear plan. That’s usually when expensive takeaway becomes the easiest option..!
Now meals are already organised. Sometimes dinner is fully prepared and just needs reheating. Other times, ingredients are ready so whoever gets home first can simply add everything into the Thermomix® and press start..
Dinner happens without stress – and without a $70 takeaway order!
How Meal Planning Naturally Reduces Grocery Bills
One unexpected benefit of meal planning is how much less I spend at the supermarket.
When I know exactly what we’re cooking, I buy fewer unnecessary items, we waste far less foo and I shop with intention rather than guesswork.
With current grocery prices in Australia, simply using what we already have at home properly makes a noticeable difference to the weekly budget. Simple pantry staples are also often an endless source of savings.
Saving money on groceries isn’t really about cutting quality – it’s about being well organised.

Why Online Grocery Shopping Saves Me Even More
Another habit that dramatically reduced our food spending was switching to online grocery shopping.
Walking through a supermarket almost guarantees impulse purchases. Special displays, promotions, and last-minute additions easily push the total higher than planned.
Shopping online changes the experience completely. It allows me to :
– track spending in real time
– compare brands quickly
– choose better-value options
– avoid impulse buying altogether
I only end up buying what we actually need, which is one of the simplest ways to save money on groceries every week.

The Cookidoo® Shopping List I Use Every Week
One feature I genuinely couldn’t live without is the Cookidoo® integrated shopping list.
After selecting recipes for the week, all ingredients automatically appear in my list with the correct quantities. It removes the mental load of planning and ensures nothing is forgotten.
This means fewer emergency supermarket runs, and those quick “just grabbing one thing” visits are often the most expensive ones.

Cooking from Scratch: Where the Real Savings Happen
Cooking from scratch is often seen as time-consuming, but the Thermomix completely changes that.
As I’m writing this, I have a fresh batch of bread proofing in my Thermomix® bowl.. It took about five minutes this morning using simple pantry staples, and that one loaf will save us roughly $10–15 compared to buying good-quality bakery bread.
Small savings like this happen constantly:
– homemade bread
– pizza dough
– sauces
– soups
– snacks and dips
– lunchbox fillers
– family dinners
When everyday staples become quick and easy to make at home, food costs drop naturally without feeling restrictive.
Multiply that across several meals each week and it becomes clear how families can save hundreds of dollars each year simply by cooking more meals at home.

Replacing Expensive Takeaway Without Spending More Time Cooking
Many meals we used to order as takeaway are now easier (and quicker!) to cook at home than ordering delivery.
Pizza nights, curries, pasta sauces, stir fries – these are all mostly hands-free in the Thermomix®.
I’m not standing at the stove for hours. The machine cooks while we help with homework, answer emails, or simply unwind after work.
Don’t get me wrong – we still enjoy eating out! But it now feels intentional (and fun!) rather than a reaction to exhaustion.

Saving Time and Money at the Same Time
What surprised me most when I first brought my Thermomix® home (now 7 years ago! was that the Thermomix doesn’t save money because I cook more – it saves money because I think less about cooking every day!
Planning once removes daily decision fatigue. Food waste decreases. Shopping becomes intentional. Weekday dinners becomes predictable and stress-free.
Healthy home cooking stops feeling like work, and that’s when sustainable savings really begin.
You May be Wondering… Is a Thermomix® Worth It for Saving Money?
For our household, the Thermomix® has definitely become less of an appliance and more of a system for running the kitchen efficiently.
Families that regularly use their Thermomix® find that they spend way less on groceries, end up ordering takeaway far less often, waste less food and eat better, healthier meals every day.
The savings happen quietly in the background, week after week.
